What time blindness actually feels like

It isn't forgetting appointments, and it isn't laziness. It is a missing internal sense — the background estimate most people run without thinking about it, the one that says about twenty minutes have gone by. When that estimate is unreliable, ordinary days get strange in specific ways:

"Time blindness" is not a clinical diagnosis. It is a plain-language name the ADHD community gave to this experience because the existing words didn't fit. We use it here in that spirit — as a description of a daily frustration, not a medical claim.

Why the clock doesn't fix it

The standard advice is to look at the time more often. Set a timer. Put a clock in every room. If that worked, you would have solved this years ago.

The problem is that a countdown only works if you look at it, and looking is exactly the thing that stops happening once your attention is somewhere else. The cue and the failure share the same cause. Worse, when you do look, a shrinking number is its own distraction: now there's a second thing in the room competing for attention, ticking, quietly raising the stakes. Plenty of people describe watching the timer instead of doing the work.

A visual timer asks for the one resource you're short of. A physical one doesn't ask for anything — it arrives.

What tends to help instead

The strategies people actually stick with have something in common: the signal comes from outside, and noticing it costs nothing.

1. An external, continuous signal

Rather than checking elapsed time, feel it. A steady, low pulse in the background gives you a sense of duration without a single glance — the way you know roughly how long a song has been playing without watching a progress bar.

2. Interval cues through the day

Discreet nudges at a fixed rhythm — every twenty minutes, say — re-anchor you without demanding anything. Each one is a small "you are here" in the middle of the day. This is the idea behind dedicated vibrating reminder watches, and it works; the hardware was just always the awkward part.

3. Warnings before transitions, not at them

Being told a session is over at the exact moment it ends is too late to switch smoothly. A cue slightly beforehand gives the shift somewhere to land.

4. Silence

An alarm you can hear is an alarm other people can hear. In an office, a classroom or a meeting that's a cost, and the usual fix — muting it — removes the cue entirely. Haptics have no such trade-off.
